Stairlifts in the UK have been around for many years. There is evidence that King Henry VIII was the first person to make use of the concept of assisted transport up and down steps. It is believed that one of his subjects constructed a system of block and tackle pulleys on a track that provided the rather large King a way to navigate the stairs of Whitehall Palace in London. It wasn’t until the 1930’s however, when an American from Pennsylvania, C.C .Crispin, invented what he called the Inclin-ator. This was the first motorised stairlift in modern times. In the UK, one of the first persons to manufacture and sell the motorised stairlift was Fred Brooks who started making and selling the Brooks stairlifts in 1973. His products were created out of necessity as he had built a prototype in 1972 to allow his wife Grace to get up and down the stairs in their home after her arthritis worsened. The design and product were so well received that he began producing them for sale shortly thereafter.
